3 Security Trends You Can’t Afford to Ignore in 2025

As the digital landscape continues to evolve, the role of identity and access management (IAM) is becoming more central than ever in the battle to secure data, users, and infrastructure. According to Okta’s 10th annual Businesses at Work report, which draws on anonymized data from thousands of global organizations and users, three major trends are shaping the future of security — and every security leader should take note.

1. Cyber Threats Are Rising Sharply in Critical Sectors
Cyber threats are escalating across industries, but the energy and nonprofit sectors are experiencing disproportionate pressure. According to Okta ThreatInsight, which monitors login activity across its customer base, the energy, mining, oil, and gas industries faced a 10x year-over-year increase in detected threats. In fact, 32% of all authentications in these sectors were flagged as threats — an alarming statistic by any measure.
The nonprofit sector is now the second most targeted, with 18% of login attempts considered suspicious. Many nonprofits operate with limited cybersecurity budgets, making them attractive targets. A recent survey showed that nearly two-thirds of nonprofits experienced a security breach or major data incident in the last 12 months. These numbers highlight a critical need for improved access controls and threat detection capabilities across high-risk verticals.

2. Security Tools Are Leading the App Adoption Race
Security is no longer just an IT concern — it’s a business priority. The report found that security applications dominated the list of fastest-growing enterprise tools in 2025. Among the top performers:
Bitwarden, a robust open-source password manager
Tailscale, a secure networking tool built on WireGuard
Drata and Vanta, both of which provide automated compliance and security monitoring
In terms of categories, VPNs and firewalls remain the most widely adopted, followed by endpoint security and identity governance tools. This growth indicates that companies are investing more than ever in scalable, integrated security solutions to support hybrid workforces and cloud-native environments.

3. A Passwordless Future Is No Longer Optional
Authentication remains a major vulnerability: 63% of security breaches in 2024 were linked to compromised credentials or weak authentication flows. The good news is that organizations are shifting toward more secure, phishing-resistant methods.
Adoption of Okta’s FastPass — a passwordless, biometric-enabled authenticator — grew by 52% YoY. Similarly, the use of security keys and biometrics increased by 16%.
At the same time, reliance on outdated and lower-assurance factors is declining:
SMS and voice-based authentication methods dropped by 14%
Security questions usage fell by 12%
This signals a broader industry shift toward Zero Trust architectures and stronger identity assurance — especially important in regulated industries and global enterprises.

What’s Next?
These findings reinforce a central truth: Identity is the new security perimeter. Organizations that prioritize visibility, proactive threat detection, and secure access will be best positioned to mitigate risks and comply with evolving regulations.
If you’re rethinking your IAM strategy, it’s time to embrace modern, flexible tools that support passwordless authentication, real-time threat insights, and seamless integrations.
